How our programs work

For 30 years we've helped transform the lives of tens of thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people. Here's how our programs work.

The opportunity

Connection to Culture is vital to disrupting the cycle of inequality Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience.

When our young people have a strong sense of self, Culture and community, healing is fostered. It creates a sense of belonging, builds self-esteem and confidence and improves their social and emotional wellbeing which ultimately has positive flow-on effects for their educational and employment outcomes.

Our approach

We are by community, for community. As a 100% Indigenous-governed and led organisation, with Indigenous staff delivering our programs, we have the lived experience and shared cultural knowledge to provide the right support to the communities we serve.

We work in schools in urban, regional and remote areas providing our young people with intensive, personal, wrap-around support across the entire school year. We build trust and long-term relationships with them, their families, their schools and their communities. We support them in their education, inspire, mentor and build pathways for future opportunities that enable our young people to thrive at school and beyond.

Our impact

Our young people experience better outcomes, creating a positive ripple effect for families, schools, and the community. Our unique approach enables our young people to experience better outcomes in:

  • Connection to Culture
  • Wellbeing
  • Education and employment

When our young people feel culturally connected and experience improved social and emotional wellbeing they’re more likely to attend and perform better in school and attain their high-school education. This educational attainment is key to positive future employment opportunities, better health, safer housing, improved socioeconomic status across all areas and ultimately disrupting the cycle of inequality they experience.

These positive changes don’t stop at our young people. They create a ripple effect for families, schools, and the broader community.
